A wounded military dog is being honored for her bravery after completing more than 400 missions with the U.S. Marines.
Lucca was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal in London today – the highest medal for valor for animals.
The 12-year-old German shepherd lost her left front leg after a hidden IED exploded in Afghanistan in 2012, Trace Gallagher reported.
Before that, Lucca had spent 6 years in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing out enemy weapons and explosives.
Impressively, not a single U.S. military member has died under her watch, said Gallagher.
Lucca now lives with the Marine sergeant who trained her a decade ago.
She is the first U.S. Marine dog to win this medal – joining 66 other service animals celebrated for their service.
