A group of protesters stormed the National Assembly on Tuesday, February 23 over the planned suspension of Senator Kabir Marafa representing Zamfara central senatorial district. The group named open Society Coalition demanded for immediate resignation of the Senate President in order to focus on his trial at CCT. They were also against the alleged statement against the Senate and Senate President Bukola Saraki who is currently facing trial at Code of Coduct Tribunal (CCT).
While standing in front of the National Assembly, they held up banners that read “Suspend Saraki not Marafa, stop suspending members leave the Senate and face CCT”, “Democracy survives inclusive not in suspending people of different opinion” and ” NASS centre of Democracy not Facist centre” among others. It will be recalled that Marafa was summoned by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions but failed to appear in order to answer allegations of misguided statements aimed at disparaging the National Assembly. The senator was petitioned by two senators, Isah Misau (APC) representing Bauchi Central senatorial district and Matthew Urhoghide (PDP) representing Edo South senatorial district. He is alleged by the petitioners of making comments and publications in a national dailies that demeaned the reputation of the National Assembly.
