Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney ‘motivated’ by Jose Mourinho’s arrival

Wayne Rooney has said that the arrival of manager Jose Mourinho has given him even more motivation and described the Portuguese as a “nice guy” who is one of the all-time greats.
Mourinho’s opening news conference as the new Manchester United manager contained a message for Rooney.

The former Chelsea manager made clear that Rooney was not being viewed as a midfielder for United and suggested that the England captain has been delivering impressive passes from that position when under no pressure.
Rooney told the club’s official magazine Inside United: “I’m really excited to be working with Jose this season as he’s one of the best managers in the world. And it’s an exciting time for Manchester United.
“I’ve always respected him both as a man and a manager, he’s a nice guy and one of the most successful managers of all time. I like to think I’m always motivated as a player but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit more motivated when a new manager comes in.”

The 30-year-old faces a fight for his place in the side, with the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic adding to the club’s attacking options. His testimonial match against Everton at Old Trafford will be Mourinho’s first home game in charge of United.
Rooney is hoping that Mourinho will keep up his impressive record at Old Trafford, saying: “I’ve played against many Mourinho sides over the years and I can’t remember any easy games, so I think that says it all. His teams are always hard to beat, tactically disciplined and, most importantly, successful.
“He’ll bring all these qualities with him and I’m sure he’ll have his own ideas, but one of the biggest assets will be his experience.”
