Tributes have been paid to the mum-of-two who had a ‘lifelong record of public service and a deep commitment to humanity’
Labour MP Jo Cox has died after she was stabbed and shot in the street outside her constituency office in West Yorkshire, it was confirmed this evening.
Ms Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was left bleeding heavily on the ground by her attacker.
The 41-year-old was immediately taken to hospital, but police confirmed at a press conference held earlier this afternoon that she had died from her injuries.
A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street in Birstall in the aftermath of the attack, West Yorkshire Police confirmed.
Cox’s husband, Brendan, said after her death was announced: “Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo’s friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.
Dozens of Mrs Cox's friends and colleagues gathered for a vigil at St Peter's Church in Birstall earlier.
MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE
