Three commuters were wounded during an attack, and one of those victims has life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses said the knifeman shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he targeted commuters, which means "God is great" in Arabic.A man who was critically injured after a stabbing at a railway station near Munich has died in hospital.
The 56-year-old had been on a stationary train in Grafing station when he was assaulted. Police had earlier said he was 50.
Forensic experts cordoned off the platform where the stabbings took place, which was covered in bloody footprints.
It is believed the 27-year-old suspect, who was arrested at the scene, had used a knife with a 10cm blade.
Prosecutors have said the alleged attacker is not co-operating with the police, and a spokesman added: "The assailant made remarks at the scene of the crime that indicate a political motivation - apparently an Islamist motive."
The man apprehended is a German national who was not known to the police and did not live in the region.
Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, confirmed officials will examine whether the suspect was mentally disturbed - "perhaps because of a drug addiction".
Several German media outlets have reported the alleged attacker is Paul H. from Hesse, a state in central Germany which is about 200 miles away from Munich.
Investigators have not confirmed whether it was a terror attack at this stage.
