Barely five days before the commencement of their first semester examination, the students of the Kogi State University, Anyigba have been compelled to return home, following the indefinite strike action embarked upon by the academic staff of the institution.
In a unanimous decision taken at the meeting of the Academic Staff Union of the University in Anyiga yesterday, the lecturers vowed not to return to their duty post until all the four-month arrears of salaries owed them are paid.
A senior lecturer who spoke to Peoples Daily on condition of anonymity, said government was insensitive to their plight as they are not expected to work in an empty stomach, saying the position they took at the meeting was simply “No work no pay”.
He further disclosed that the 210 lecturers who were present at the meeting were unanimous in their resolution, even as he stressed that one of them that attempted to plead for more time for the management to find solution to their problem was almost lynched.
He pointed out that before now ASUU branch of the institution was polarized, but in yesterday’s meeting there was no dissenting voice as they forgot their differences by speaking with one voice with a view to confronting their present challenges.
Based on the resolution of the lecturers according to him, they are not prepared to return to classrooms until all the salaries being owed them are paid completely, even as he disclosed that the entire matter now is in the hands of the national body of ASUU.
