To make U-20 team, Osimhen and Nwakali must improve - Amuneke

– Emmanuel Amuneke says development of Nwakali, Osimhen is a collective effort by Nigerians

– The former Super Eagles coach was recently named coach of the U-20 Flying Eagles team

– Amuneke won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile with Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Nwakali as his star players

Newly appointed Flying Eagles coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has weighed in on the futures of the World Cup winning players he coached at the U-17 level.

Amuneke said he  would look at the progress of the players he coached at the U-17 level before incorporating them at the U-20 level.

The former Super Eagles attacker guided the likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Nwakali and Victor Osimhen to gold at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.

He said: “The issue of promoting the likes of Nwakali and Osimhen to the national team is not my job.

“I have nurtured them, people should not blame me if they do not make the national team. Their development is a collective effort not just my input.

“We have to give them the room and platform to develop as a country, if not their progress will stall.”

Amuneke was speaking at day four of the ongoing Social Media Week at the Landmark event centre in Oniru, Lagos. When asked  if he will integrate the Golden Eaglets into the U-20 team he is set to coach, Amuneke said he hopes the players continue to develop so they can be added into the squad.
He said: “In football you cannot really predict, the players you are looking to be the stars might not become the players you want them to be.“A player that started out very slow might be the one that turned out to be the star in the nearest future. What counts is the the continuity to grow, to learn, the willingness to learn. “We all have a role to play, both the media, the players, the coaches in their development.”
Amuneke was recently appointed coach of the U-20 Flying Eagles national team by the Nigeria Football Federation after winning the U-17 World Cup with the Golden Eaglets in 2015.
