Fire at Sokoto popular market Kara market

Traders at Kara market in Sokoto state are currently counting their lost following the midnight fire that gutted the market.

It was gathered that goods worth millions of naira were gutted at building material section of the market. The inferno gutted expensive building materials like ceilings, nails, woods, paints jars, among others valued at hundreds of million of naira. Some of the traders who spoke with NAN correspondent said the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but suspected the poor epileptic power supply recently witnessed in some areas of the state. The affected traders commended the efforts of the state fire service, sympathizers and that of the commissioner for home affairs, Isa Achida in putting out the raging fire. The traders appealed to the state government to swiftly come to their rescue to cushion the effect of the incident. Speaking at the scene, the secretary, Kara market building material sellers association, Bello Bibi, described the development as shocking. He disclosed that members are yet to come to reality over the loss of property worth millions of naira. Bibi said some of the materials destroyed by the fire included wood, nails, ceilings, paint as well as carpentry materials. He pleaded with both the state and Federal Governments as well as public spirited individuals to urgently assistance. While describing the incident as an act of God, the secretary also called for the strengthening of the capacity of the fire service station at the nearby Sokoto central market. Achida, on his part, gave an assurance that the state government would come to the aid of the victims at the appropriate time.

In a related development, fire also gutted the female section of the Jos central Mosque. It was gathered that huge flames swallowed most parts of the entire Mosque. The flames and smoke also covered houses and shops in the vicinity. Mr Emmanuel Abu, spokesman of the Plateau police command confirmed the incident.
